Nearshore vs Offshore: Which Fits a Small Agency?
Last updated . Every definition and time zone on this page was checked October 1, 2026.
Nearshore means the work is done in a nearby foreign country. Offshore means the work is done in another country, often because costs are lower there. The clearest difference you can measure is the time gap: Indonesia, for example, is 11 to 14 hours ahead of US Eastern time. For a small agency, how the team is run matters as much as where it sits.
What's the difference between nearshore and offshore?
Both mean the work happens in another country. Nearshore adds one condition: the country is close to yours. Offshore covers any other country, near or far.
- Nearshoring: moving business work to a nearby foreign country.
- Offshoring: having work done in another country, often because costs are lower there.
By these definitions, nearshoring is one kind of offshoring: the nearby kind.
Onshore vs nearshore vs offshore: how do they compare?
Onshore means the team works in your own country. Nearshore is a nearby country. Offshore is any other country, which can be far away.
| Onshore | Nearshore | Offshore | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the team works | Your own country | A nearby foreign country | Another country, near or far |
| Time gap | Your own country's zones | Can be small. Mexico City is 1 to 2 hours behind New York, and Bogota is the same time or 1 hour behind | Can be large. Manila is 12 to 13 hours ahead of New York, and Jakarta 11 to 12 |
| Cost reason in the definition | None given | None given | Often chosen because costs are lower |
| What to check every time | Who does the work, who manages it, whose name the logins are in | The same | The same |
Nearshore vs offshore: pros and cons
| What to weigh | Nearshore | Offshore |
|---|---|---|
| Time overlap | Pro: a nearby country can share most of your working day. Mexico City is 1 to 2 hours behind New York | Con: can be far apart. Jakarta is 11 to 12 hours ahead of New York, and Manila 12 to 13 |
| Cost | No cost reason in the definition. Compare written quotes | Pro: often chosen because costs are lower |
Daytime contact, visits, working language and skills depend on the team, not on nearshore or offshore. Ask each team about them, and judge them during a trial task.
To vet a nearshore team in detail, see how to vet a nearshore partner.

Does nearshore or offshore cost less?
Neither one always costs less. Offshoring is often chosen because costs are lower in the other country, but nearshoring is defined by distance, not price. Compare written quotes for the same work from each team you're weighing.
When you compare, put every option in the same terms: what you pay a month, how much work it covers, and who manages it. As one offshore example, DeskTeam360 publishes $1,497, $2,994 or $4,491 a month for 1, 2 or 3 tasks at a time. A full-time hire is a different thing, one person full time, so it isn't a like-for-like price. For that comparison, see what a web hire costs compared with outsourcing.
How many hours of overlap do you get with an offshore team?
It depends on the country and the season. For Indonesia, there's little or no overlap with a normal US workday: Indonesia is 11 to 14 hours ahead of US Eastern time, depending on the zone and the time of year.
Here's how that looks on the clock, for Jakarta (WIB, UTC+7) and New York:
| When it's this in New York | It's this in Jakarta |
|---|---|
| 9 a.m. in winter (Eastern standard time, UTC-5) | 9 p.m. the same day |
| 9 a.m. in summer (Eastern daylight time, UTC-4) | 8 p.m. the same day |
Indonesia has three time zones, UTC+7, UTC+8 and UTC+9, with no daylight saving time.
The same math for a few example cities, measured against New York:
| City | Offset from UTC | Gap with New York in winter | Gap with New York in summer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico City | UTC-6, no daylight time | 1 hour behind | 2 hours behind |
| Bogota | UTC-5, no daylight time | Same time | 1 hour behind |
| Manila | UTC+8, no daylight time | 13 hours ahead | 12 hours ahead |
| Jakarta | UTC+7, no daylight time | 12 hours ahead | 11 hours ahead |
So at 9 a.m. in New York in winter, it's 8 a.m. in Mexico City, 10 p.m. in Manila and 9 p.m. in Jakarta. The gaps shift by an hour in March and November, because New York moves to daylight time and these four cities don't. These cities are examples of the math, not a list of where teams are. Jakarta is one of Indonesia's three zones. US Eastern time is UTC-5, or UTC-4 from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
So the question for any offshore team is who you talk to during your day. One answer is a contact who works during your day. DeskTeam360's is a North American account manager who assigns, manages and checks each task.
What's the difference between offshoring and outsourcing?
Outsourcing is about who does the work: an outside company or person instead of your own staff. Offshoring is about where the work happens: in another country.
- Outsource to a company down the street: outsourcing, not offshoring.
- Open your own office in another country: offshoring, not outsourcing.
- Pay an outside team in another country: both.
Nearshore or offshore: which fits a small agency?
The one that gives you the same people, a manager on your side, and work that's checked before you see it. The map comes second. Judge any team against this list:
- Same people. Will the same people work on your sites every month?
- A manager on your side. Who assigns the work, and who checks it before it reaches you?
- A real workplace. Do they work from an office with backup internet and power?
- Ownership in writing. Does a signed agreement say who owns the work?
- Logins in your name. Do your domain, hosting and accounts stay yours?
- Daytime contact. Who answers during your working day?
This site is run by DeskTeam360, so here's how DeskTeam360 answers that list, as one example. Its production team works from one physical office in Indonesia, which makes it an offshore team for a US agency, not a nearshore one. A North American account manager assigns each task, manages it, and checks the work before the client sees it. Clients work with the same people every month, and those people learn the client's brand and standards. The office has new computers, three internet providers and two backup power sources.
"As a small ad agency, we aren't strangers to outsourcing some of our development work. We've used everything from freelancers to full agencies. Deskteam's process is absolutely excellent."
