What's the average freelance web developer hourly rate?
There's no official average, so use published market figures. Upwork says freelance web developers on its site typically charge $15 to $50 an hour. ZipRecruiter puts the US average at about $45.12 an hour, as of October 2026.
These come from two sources, measured two ways. Use them as a range to check quotes against. They aren't one average.
What's the hourly rate for a staff web developer?
A staff web developer in the US earned a median wage of $44.54 an hour in 2025, says the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's the wage only. The employer's taxes and benefits come on top.
Close jobs, from the same 2025 data:
| Job (BLS, 2025 median hourly wage) | US | Florida |
|---|---|---|
| Web developers | $44.54 | Not published by BLS |
| Computer programmers | $48.26 | $44.80 |
| Web and digital interface designers | $50.00 | $37.37 |
BLS also has a combined group for web developers and digital designers. Its 2025 median pay was $47.85 an hour, or $99,520 a year. It's higher than the web developer figure because it's a wider group.
An employee costs more than the wage. In June 2026, full-time private workers cost employers $54.00 an hour on average. Wages were $36.97 of that. Benefits were $17.03, or 31.5%. That's across all jobs, not only web work. Employers also pay 6.2% Social Security tax on wages up to $184,500 in 2026. They pay 1.45% Medicare tax on all wages. Why do freelance web developer rates vary so much?
Rates vary with the developer's experience, where they live, what skills the job needs, and how the platform sets fees. That's why two quotes for the same job can be far apart.
- Experience. Senior developers charge more than juniors.
- Location. Living costs differ by country and region, and so do rates.
- Skills. Custom code, WooCommerce and app work cost more than small edits.
- Job size. Some developers charge more per hour for short jobs.
- Platform. Marketplaces take fees, and some developers raise rates to cover them.
- Speed. Rush work often costs more.
No two independent sources split freelance rates by experience or region yet, so this page doesn't give those numbers.
How does hourly pricing compare with a flat monthly team?
Hourly pricing charges for every hour, so the bill grows with the work. A flat monthly team charges one set price, and the plan sets how many tasks run at once.
| Freelance web developer (hourly) | Staff web developer | Flat monthly team (DeskTeam360) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | By the hour | A salary | A set price each month |
| Published number | $15 to $50 an hour on Upwork. About $45.12 on ZipRecruiter (October 2026) | US median $44.54 an hour in 2025, wage only | $1,497, $2,994, or $4,491 a month for 1, 2, or 3 tasks at a time (September 2026) |
| Added on top | Your time managing the work | Employer taxes and benefits | Nothing extra is published |
| Who does the work | One person, for the hours you buy | One person, full time | A team: 2 designers, 2 developers, 2 technical VAs, and 1 team leader |
| Who checks the work | You | You | A North American account manager, before you see it |
| Paperwork | Contractor report and 1099-NEC | Payroll and new hire report | No 1099-NEC for payments to a corporation, generally. The IRS lists exceptions. Ask the provider |
| Contract | Set by each person | Employment | None. Month to month |
So you're comparing an hourly person with a team that has 1, 2, or 3 of your tasks open at once.
What an hourly rate leaves out:
- Your time. You write the brief, answer questions and check the work.
- State and federal forms. A Florida business reports any non-employee person it pays $600 or more a year to the state, on a 20-day clock. The federal 1099-NEC line is separate: $2,000 or more for 2026 payments.
- The risk of the wrong label. Treat someone like staff, and the law may see an employee, not a contractor. Doing that on purpose is a felony in Florida.
- Ownership. Put who owns the work in writing before it starts. The step-by-step guide explains who owns the work.
