What are the types of web hosting, and what do they cost?
There are five main types of web hosting: shared, managed WordPress, VPS, dedicated and cloud. They differ in how much of a server you get and how much the host looks after for you.
| Hosting type | What it is | Who it fits | Listed price (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared | Many sites share one server and its resources | Small sites with modest traffic | $2.99 a month to start on Hostinger's and SiteGround's pages, renewing at $10.99 to $44.99 |
| Managed WordPress | Hosting set up only for WordPress, where the host takes care of much of the server work | WordPress sites where you want less server work | $28 a month, billed yearly, on WP Engine's page. $30 to $35 a month for one site on Kinsta's |
| VPS (virtual private server) | Your own walled-off slice of a server, with set resources | Busier sites, or someone who can manage a server | From $4 a month on DigitalOcean's page. From $6.49 a month, renewing at $11.99, on Hostinger's |
| Dedicated | A whole physical server for one customer | Large, busy sites with a technical team | No price shown. Two independent list prices weren't found |
| Cloud | Your site runs on a network of servers, and you can add or remove resources as needed | Sites whose traffic goes up and down | No price shown. Two independent list prices weren't found |
Each price is one vendor's list price, not a market average. Intro prices renew higher.
What changes the price of web hosting?
The price goes up with what the plan gives you and how long you prepay. These are the main things that move it:
- Storage and traffic. More disk space and more visitors cost more.
- Number of sites. Entry plans may cover only one site. Plans for several sites cost more.
- Backups and security. Some plans include daily backups. Others charge for them.
- Support. Faster or more hands-on help sits on higher plans.
- Intro term. The lowest intro price can need a long prepay. Hostinger's lowest intro price needs a 48-month plan.
- Renewal. Every intro price on this page renews higher.
- SSL. SSL is what puts the padlock and "https" on a site. SiteGround's plans list free SSL. Check the plan page of any host you're pricing.

How much does a website domain cost?
A .com domain costs $11.08 a year to register or renew on Porkbun's pricing page, as of October 2026. That's one registrar's list price. Other registrars set their own.
The domain is the address people type. The hosting is where the site's files live. You pay for both, and they can sit with different companies.
How much does it cost to run a website?
Running a site costs hosting plus the domain plus upkeep. On SiteGround's shared hosting and a Porkbun .com, hosting and a domain come to $46.96 to $106.96 in the first year, and $226.96 to $550.96 a year once the hosting renews.
Upkeep is the part people forget. WordPress.org's advice is to run the newest version of WordPress, with a backup taken before each update. Plugins need the same care, for both security and speed. You can do that yourself, or pay for a maintenance plan.
| What you pay for (October 2026 list prices) | A month | A year (a month x 12) |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting, SiteGround, first year | $2.99 to $7.99 | $35.88 to $95.88 |
| Shared hosting, SiteGround, after renewal | $17.99 to $44.99 | $215.88 to $539.88 |
| .com domain, Porkbun | n/a | $11.08 |
| WordPress maintenance plan, GoWP, per site | $39 to $99 | $468 to $1,188 |
| WordPress maintenance plan, WP Buffs | $89 to $359 | $1,068 to $4,308 |

If your agency runs sites for clients, upkeep is work you can hand off. DeskTeam360's plans include website maintenance: updates, security monitoring, speed work, backups, and uptime monitoring.
Who should own the hosting account?
You should, or your client should. Never the helper who builds the site. Whoever holds the hosting account controls the site.
Lemonade Legend found this out. The owner's former marketer had set up the site on the marketer's own hosting, then stopped cooperating and held back part of a key task. DeskTeam360's team found a way around it, and the case study calls it a hijacked website that was recovered.
