How to Choose a WordPress Maintenance Service

Last updated . Outside prices and sources were checked October 1, 2026, and DeskTeam360's details on September 25, 2026.

A WordPress maintenance service keeps your sites updated, backed up, secure, and online for a monthly fee. Two published examples: GoWP lists plans at $39 to $99 per site a month, and WP Buffs lists $89 to $359 a month, as of October 2026. To choose a service, check what's included and how fast they respond. Then ask how they handle a failed update, what they report to you, and whether your logins stay in your name.

What should you expect from a WordPress maintenance service?

Expect a service to handle the routine upkeep on a schedule: updates, backups, security monitoring, and uptime monitoring. WordPress.org's own advice is to always update to the latest version and to back up first, and the full list of WordPress maintenance tasks is in the guide to WordPress maintenance.

As one example, DeskTeam360's maintenance covers monthly WordPress core, plugin, and theme updates, security monitoring and malware scanning, daily or weekly automated backups, uptime monitoring, and speed work.

What's the difference between WordPress maintenance and support?

Maintenance is scheduled upkeep on a fixed list: updates, backups, and monitoring. Support is help when you ask for it: fixing a bug, changing a page, or adding a feature. Some services sell them together, so check which one a price covers.

At DeskTeam360, maintenance is included in every plan. Other web work, like bug fixes, landing pages, and custom features, runs as tasks on the same plan.

To ask how maintenance and web tasks would work for your client sites, you can book a call with DeskTeam360.

How do you choose a WordPress maintenance company?

Choose by checking what's covered, how they protect the site, and whether you keep control of it. Ask every company the questions in this table.

What to check What to ask
Updates How often do you update WordPress, plugins, and themes? Do you back up first, as WordPress.org advises?
Testing Do you test updates on a copy of the site first?
Backups How often do you back up, where are backups kept, and have you tested a restore?
Security Do you monitor for security problems and scan for malware?
Uptime Do you watch whether the site is up, and tell me when it goes down?
Response time How fast do you respond when the site is down?
Failed updates What happens when an update breaks something? Who fixes it, and is that included?
Fixes and changes Are small fixes and page changes included, or billed separately?
Logins and hosting Will the domain, hosting, and logins stay in my name?
Contract Am I locked in, or is it month to month?
Reviews Where can I read reviews from real clients?

The logins row matters more than it looks. The step-by-step guide's section on hosting and logins shows what can go wrong when someone else holds them.

What should a WordPress maintenance service report to you?

A service should tell you what it did, what it found, and what needs a decision from you. Ask for a short report each month that covers:

  • What was updated: WordPress, plugins, and themes, with version numbers
  • Which backups ran, and where they're stored
  • Any security problems or malware found, and what was done
  • Any downtime, and how long it lasted
  • Anything that broke, and how it was fixed
  • What needs your decision, like a plugin that should be replaced

If you sell WordPress upkeep to your own clients, see WordPress maintenance plans to sell to your clients.

How much does WordPress maintenance cost?

Two published examples, as of October 2026: GoWP's plans run $39 to $99 per site a month, and WP Buffs' plans run $89 to $359 a month. These are each company's list prices, not averages. Compare what each plan includes, not only the price.

DeskTeam360 works differently. Maintenance is included in its flat monthly plans. The published prices as of September 2026 are $1,497, $2,994, or $4,491 a month, for 1, 2, or 3 tasks at a time. That price covers the whole team and all 8 services, not maintenance alone. Plans run month to month with no contract, and you can cancel whenever you like.

"We have been very happy with the support DeskTeam360 provides. They are quick to respond to requests and their team has the breadth of experience we need to keep things moving."

If your agency looks after client sites and the upkeep keeps slipping, a call shows how a flat monthly team would handle it.
